Sofia filmfest to show Iran’s ‘Pari’

The 2021 Sofia Int'l Film Festival in Bulgaria is to screen Iranian feature ‘Pari’.

The 2021 edition of the Sofia International Film Festival in Bulgaria has been scheduled to screen Iranian feature ‘Pari’.

Directed and written by Siamak Etemadi, the 101-minute film will go on the screen at the International competition section of the 25th edition of the Bulgarian event.

“Babak, an Iranian student in Greece, doesn’t show up to welcome his visiting parents at the Athens airport. Pari and her older husband, both devout Muslims abroad for the first time, are ill-prepared to search for their son in an intimidating and alien environment. All their attempts to find a clue that might lead them to him prove to be in vain and they soon reach a dead end. But Pari can't give up looking for him... Following the steps of her rebellious son in the darkest corners of the city, she will exhaust her inner strength to achieve more than a mother's search for her missing son,” the website of the Sofia gala has written about ‘Pari’.

The movie is about Pari. Stunned to discover that her son has vanished while studying abroad in Athens, Pari sets off on a desperate search across the Greek capital to find him.

Navigating a foreign and forbidding landscape, Pari is forced out from the shadow of her spouse to take the lead in the search for her child.

The feature debut from Iranian-Greek director portrays a woman who finds unsuspected depths of courage within herself.

The movie has been picked among the 20 Best West Asian Films of 2020 by the Asian Movie Pulse website.

Melika Foroutan, Shahbaz Noshir, Sofia Kokkali, Lena Kitsopoulou, Argyris Padazaras, and Dimitris Xanthopoulos are on the cast list of the movie.

Produced in Greece, France, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria, ‘Pari’ has been screened at global events such as the 2020 Berlinale in Germany, the Persian Film Festival in Australia, and the 2020 Zagreb Film Festival in Croatia.

The Sofia festival, according to its website, is the biggest film festival in Bulgaria. The festival strives to make a connection between the local audience and the international cinemas.

The 2021 edition of the festival is slated for March 11-31.
